Ashmore, Dorset. July 20.
Start at this pretty village on a sunny day,
though the breeze kept us cool. |

1. Starting at 5.00 a.m. from
Ludlow Castle entrance in the early sunshine
we went via Croft Ambrey and Whapley Iron Age
Hill Forts, when the sun had deserted us for
a while, to the sunshine and puffy
white clouds over the hill on the last stage
into Kington at about 5.30 p.m.
Only a few of our members get involved in
these challenges, for the more sensible
walking see the snippets below. |
 |
2. A fantastic sunny day in
January. After a morning tackling the
mud through the woods, we rested for lunch at
Drusilla's Inn, Horton. Much refreshed
we climbed the grassy hill to Horton Tower,
built so the Squire could watch the deer and
the hunt. Making the most of the
afternoon sun we stood dwarfed by the tower
for a group picture, before heading back to
Witchampton |
 |
A sudden cold snap in April
2008 gave us a snowy start from Bishops
Waltham. It was still snowing slightly
as we headed out to the country, but as it
was likely to warm up we had an early stop to
get a rare Hampshire snow scene. The
walk finished in bright sunshine.

3. Our Wednesday evening walks
are really quite social. Walking over
gentle downland and ridgeways North of the
A272, we came to rest at a favourite pub, the
Hinton Arms at Cheriton, for some refreshment
and chat. |
 |
4. A mossy tree-trunk in Langley
Woods for our tea/coffee break
Starting from the A36 near Golden Acres,
between Ower and Salisbury along wooded paths
and hedgerows past postcard cottages,
we discover frogspawn and tadpoles in the
woodland puddles, and see rabbits bolt for
their burrows around Hamptworth. All blessed
with July sunshine |
 |
5. The 'Jolly Brolly Brigade'.
Undamped spirits in our 'wickable'
waterproofs on this summer evening walk.
Looks like the seashore , but it is by one of
the lakes in the New Forest. |
 |
6. Sunday is a day for our
longer walks. The fine weather forecast
brought out most of our regular all day
walkers for a January start from Upham to a
lunch time stop at Beauworth. Here we
are ready to start the afternoon completing
the circuit. |
 |
7. From the start close to Exbury
Club, via farmland and small woods we reached
the seashore, with the sun and tide both out!
Lovely walk along the shore, past some llamas
(!!) through the fields back to the start and
a brew up for tea and cakes. |
 |
8. You couldn't wish for a
finer day for this' faster pace ' walk ; starting at the
village duck pond at Upham ( on 14/04/07) we cover the gorgeous
rolling downland South-East of Winchester . Steep descents
through pine forests and steady hill side climbs with stunning
views put us on target for the welcoming Brushmakers Arms and a
refreshing soda! |
|
 |
9. From the start near
Exbury Club ( on 24/11/07), via small woods and open
grasslands we reach the foreshore at Lepe Beach .Honestly
it was the winter gales that felled this magnificent pine ; our
photo grandstand !
Delightful views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight are
followed later by the bemused gaze of llamas , the black one's
shaggy coat tangled with autumn leaves,...."don't be alarmed by
the leafy llamas of Lepe "....intones Tom on our woodland
return .
